Earthwork and Road/Bridge Building
Winnipeg South End
Sewage Treatment Plant upgrade
Project owner: City of Winnipeg
Total cost: $335.6 million
CLAC-represented companies: North America Construction (NAC)
CLAC members at peak: 60
Scope: Local 152 members employed by NAC participated in upgrading the South End Sewage Treatment Plant—one of three treatment plants serving the city. Local 152 members are responsible for completing the foundations and groundwork for bioreactors, clarifying containers, a blower building, concrete piping, and miscellaneous ground work and maintenance. Most of the members work as carpenters, concrete finishers, labourers, and crane operators.
Once complete, the facilities will be better equipped to remove nitrogen and phosphorous from the clean water that is pumped back into the Red River. This is key to reducing algae blooms on Lake Winnipeg. The expanded facilities will also accommodate the expected growth of the city.
