Lock 3 Refacing (St. Lawrence Seaway),
St. Catharines, ON
Project owner: St. Lawrence Seaway Management Company
Total cost: $3.1 million
CLAC-represented companies: Rankin Construction Inc.
CLAC members at peak: 45
Scope: CLAC members gave seven monoliths of Lock 3 a much-needed facelift. Members blasted 750 mm of existing concrete from the face of the monoliths as crews worked to reconstruct more than 2,300 cubic metres of reinforced concrete in less than 60 days. Even the harsh winter of 2010-2011 didn't prevent workers from completing the project before the lock became operational in March 2011. The members employed by Rankin included forepersons, carpenters, form setters, skilled labourers, grade persons, and cement finishers. They were involved in all aspects of the work including demolition, anchoring, forming, and pouring concrete.
During the main wall pours, crews managed to complete 14 pours in 16 consecutive working days with crews working 6 days a week, 20 hours per day (two 10-hour shifts).
