Lock 2 Timber Tie-up Wall Replacement,
St. Catharines, ON
Project owner: St. Lawrence Seaway Management Company
Total cost: $3.7 million
CLAC-represented companies: Rankin Construction Inc.
CLAC members at peak: 20
Scope: Due to poor conditions of the aging timber tie-up walls and the collapse of a section near Lock 2 in January 2010, Rankin was hired to assist in the design and reconstruction of two sections of the existing wall. CLAC members employed as forepersons, carpenters, form setters, skilled labourers, grade persons, and cement finishers carried out an emergency reconstruction of a 55-meter collapsed section of wall in February and March 2010, followed by the reconstruction of an 84-meter section during the winter of 2011. CLAC members replaced the existing timber structure with steel H piles, structural steel, and reinforced concrete.
